How to Clean Silver Jewellery at Home (5 Easy Methods)
Share
Your favourite silver necklace is looking a little dull. Don't worry — silver tarnish is completely normal and reversible. You do not need expensive silver polish. Most methods use things already in your kitchen. Here are 5 simple ways to clean silver jewellery at home.
Why Does Silver Tarnish?
Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air and in certain substances (sweat, perfume, rubber) to form silver sulphide — that dark, dull layer you see on tarnished jewellery. This is a natural chemical process and does not mean the jewellery is low quality. Even pure sterling silver (925) tarnishes over time.
Method 1: Baking Soda and Aluminium Foil (Best for Heavy Tarnish)
- Line a bowl with aluminium foil, shiny side up
- Place your silver jewellery on the foil
- Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of baking soda over the jewellery
- Pour hot (not boiling) water over everything
- Let sit for 2–5 minutes — you will see the tarnish transfer from the jewellery to the foil
- Rinse well with clean water and dry with a soft cloth
Why it works: This creates an electrochemical reaction that reverses tarnish — essentially the silver sulphide moves to the aluminium.
Method 2: White Toothpaste (For Light Tarnish)
- Apply a small amount of plain white toothpaste (not gel, not whitening) to the jewellery
- Gently rub with a soft-bristled toothbrush in small circles
- Rinse thoroughly and dry
Note: Use only on plain silver. Avoid on jewellery with gemstones or pearls as the abrasive can scratch them.
Method 3: Mild Dish Soap and Warm Water (For Regular Maintenance)
- Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in warm water
- Soak the jewellery for 5–10 minutes
- Gently scrub with a soft cloth or old toothbrush
- Rinse and dry immediately
This is the safest method for all types of silver jewellery including pieces with pearls or soft stones.
Method 4: Lemon Juice and Salt
- Mix 2 tablespoons lemon juice with 1 tablespoon salt
- Dip a soft cloth in the mixture and rub gently on the tarnished areas
- Rinse well and dry thoroughly
Method 5: Commercial Silver Polish Cloth
A silver polishing cloth (available at jewellery stores for ₹100–200) is the fastest option for light tarnish and everyday maintenance. Simply rub the cloth across the surface. No water needed.
How to Prevent Silver From Tarnishing
- Store in airtight bags — anti-tarnish pouches or zip-lock bags with anti-tarnish strips work best
- Remove before bathing, swimming, or exercising
- Apply perfume and lotions before putting on jewellery, not after
- Wipe with a soft cloth after every wear to remove sweat and oils
- Keep pieces separate to prevent scratching
